Sail, Sail, Sail! The Amazing Lake Vassivière

You can’t go to a part of the world known as The Land of a Thousand Lakes and not get on that water!

Limousin’s beautiful Haute Vienne natural reserves are home to some of the most beautiful lakes in the world and one of the most popular activities to do is to sail, sail, sail!

Our favourite is Lake Vassivière as it offers incredible facilities for the sailing enthusiast and you won’t find a more scenic place to learn to sail. Lake Vassivière is one of the biggest lakes in France stretching an expanse of 1000 hectares, holding an incredible 106 million m³ of fresh water and giving you 45km of lakeside countryside and beaches to explore.

It is also home to the intriguing 70 hectare Vassivière Island which was created after the construction of a hydroelectric dam in 1949. There, you can visit the Vassivière Contemporary Art Centre. Spookily, the flooding of the valley that was required for the dam has left eight ghostly villages haunting the bottom of the lake.

Getting back to sailing, there are four fully equipped harbours at the lake and various sailing clubs and schools. Nautique Club Limousin, the French school of sailing, for example, offers its services to beginners and more experienced sailors right on the beach at Vauveix (the village surrounding the lake). Nautique Club is open between the months of April and October each year.

Of course the services on the lake are not limited to sailing, as you can try your hand at wind-surfing, motor-boating and water skiing, for which there are special reserved areas.

You can also take several boat trips around the lake, some of which offer three course meal catering services, or rent your own boat to explore the lake at your leisure.

In addition, there are six sand beaches and numerous fully-equipped playgrounds for children. And if you don’t fancy getting wet, you can still get your heart rate up by playing volleyball, tennis, basketball or table tennis, all of which can be found around the lake. Visiting the amazing City of Insects is fun for all the family and the fishermen among you would certainly love the abundant pike, perch, carp and black bass that reside in Lake Vassivière that reaches 35m in depth.
